Song of the Day 7/23/10

Fucked Up - Year of the Ox

Click here to listen to "Year of the Ox"

The latest entry in Fucked Up's Chinese New Year 12" series might be their best one yet. "Year of the Ox" punches, and it punches hard. But even with it's standard hardcore moments, the song jumps on the experimental side with an extended, almost post-rock intro, beautiful violin solos, and even vocal appearances from Zola Jesus. Fucked Up have come a long way, and their consistency matched with their continuing development might rank them as one of the premier hardcore bands out there.

Mickey Mickey Rourke - Festive Bummer (2010), MMR (2010)

Here's some more ambient for you, this time brought to you by LA's Miller Rodriguez. His moniker is Mickey Mickey Rourke and his music is yet another spin on the ambient genre. Both MMR and Festive Bummer are drenched with shoegaze drones, calling on inspiration from various psychedelia influences. You can stream both of them at their respective bandcamp pages, or, if you want to download them, you can pay 6 dollars for the entire album.

Update: Apparantly MMR is being released as a free download over at Orchid Tapes. Definitely give it a listen if you like the bandcamp stream.

Deerpeople - Deerpeople EP (2010)

Deerhunter, Deertick, Deerhoof, and now Deerpeople. At this point, I think the deer should just be retired by indie bands. I honestly do believe that there are like two hipsters in some underground bunker hard at work trying to figure out the next ironic animal (considering Bear, Deer, Mouse, and Panda are all pretty much taken)... But hey, maybe that's just me....
Anyways, here's some awesome, free, indie rock for you. Nothing wrong with that! Go here to stream/purchase the debut EP from this Oklahoma indie band.
They also have a pretty sweet deal where, for only 5 dollars, you can have the CD shipped right to you, with custom artwork by the band and even a personal letter! Sounds like a pretty sweet deal, and at the rate this album is growing on me, I might have to check that out.

Freddie Gibbs - Oil Money (ft. Chuck Inglish, Chip Tha Ripper, Bun B & Dan Auerbach)

"Oil Money"[unfortunately, the only version out there right now is edited]

Click the above link to download "Oil Money", the latest track from Freddie Gibbs. This might be his best yet; sick beat, dope lyrics, and great appearances by all the guests. "Oil Money" is slated to be the last track on Gibbs' upcoming EP, Str8 Killa. You can find that record over at Decon Records August 3.

Sleepbot

http://www.sleepbot.com/ambience/broadcast/

Sleepbot is paradise for any lover of ambient music. The site description reads:

Peaceful streaming audio featuring a random cycling of some of the most sleep-worthy tracks ever created. Live on-line sedation is available 24 / 7 / 365 and all without a doctor's prescription.

24/7 free ambient audio; perfect for doing homework, sleeping, or just filling in the space if you can't find anything to listen to. The site also features a live listener map which shows who is listening, where, and for how long. That same map also tracks how long you've been listening in total, so if you log in an hour one day and two the next, it will show your total time being three hours, as well as your current time at that very moment.

The site also features a large archival of past playlists, all of which instantly streamable. My favorite part: Despite being around since 1999, the website looks to be running the same format. It's accessible, easy listening, and entirely free. Give it a try; you can thank me later.

New Ra Ra Riot song: "Boy"

Go here to listen to "Boy", and if you give an email address, you'll receive a download link free of charge. I'm liking this a lot, then again, I'm a sucker for the cello. I really love the breakdown towards the end of this song; it really is just another great summer jam to drive to, not that there's anything wrong with that.

New Deerhunter Single "Revival" (plus unused demos and a B side)

Our first preview of Halcyon Digest has finally been released by Deerhunter free of charge! Go to this website (password is tapereel), and click on the reel-to-reel tape player. This will open the link to the single for "Revival", which also includes the B side "Primitive 3D".

Other links on the page bring you to demos that are now being released for the first time (none of these will appear on the forthcoming album, but you can download them for free for the hell of it). The other songs are "Radio Play", "Scruffy Scruff", and "Daybeams".

Animal Collective - Baleen Sample (2006)

After releasing the magnificent psych-folk release Sung Tongs, Animal Collective had some songs left over. The follow up EP, entitled Prospect Hummer, was as lush and memorizing as what had been previously released. "Baleen Sample" is just beautiful, driven by hundreds of guitar samples flowing in and out. It's an endless fountain of youth and psychedelia, and when the song finally ends, it's just as easy to pick right back up again.

Oval - Ringtone (2010)

Glitch artist Oval has released a new EP online which you can download for free. It's definitely got it's moments, even if it is extremely abstract, loud, and poppy. You can stream the album here, and if you dig, you can download the album.

Menomena - Mines (2010)

The good people over at NPR have Menomena's fourth ablum, Mines, streaming in its entirety. You can check it out here. These tracks are full, and I mean full of subtle instruments and effects. Even the quietest moments in this album have plenty of hidden layers to discover. And even without it's fine production, to its core, Mines is just an extremely solid peace of work. Oh, and on a briefly related note, you can download the singles "Taos" and "Five Little Rooms" free of charge over at Stereogum.

Chiddy Bang - Dream Chasin

Chiddy Bang "Dream Chasin"

Chiddy Bang | MySpace Music Videos

Chiddy Bang is Philly based duo Chiddy (MC) and Xyphoon (DJ/Producer). They combine rap with indie electronica, resulting in easy listening alternative hip-hop. If you like what you hear, check out their fantastic remix of MGMT's "Kids".

Jojo Mayer & Nerve - ep2 (2010)

loot by jojo mayer / nerve

Do you like dubstep? How about dubstep performed live? Yeah, it's actually possible, and Jojo Mayer & Nerve is proof of that. The drumming on this EP is so insane, I actually thought it was fake at first. You can listen to the album streaming, and if you like what you hear, you can purchase it on their bandcamp.

Blackbird Blackbird - Summer Heart LP (2010)

Finally, Blackbird Blackbird has released his debut full length, which you can find streaming on his bandcamp. This guy really came out of nowhere for me, and I can safely say for the past month, he has been dominating my last.fm. Please, support this artist and buy this one if you like it. He's going to be big soon. I promise.

White Rainbow - Sea Thru (2010)

Music for a Circular Room by WHITE RAINBOW

Awesome ambient music. If you like what you hear, you can download this album for free on his bandcamp here.

Sultan - There Goes My Girl

(right click + save as to download)

This one's really easy on the ears. If you're having a mellow day, this is for you. "Summer Sigh" isn't Sultan's only release though, if you like what you hear, check out her 7" streaming on bandcamp here.

RxRy - s/t (2010)

I love me some ambient, minimal techno. I also really enjoy albums that artists release for free. If you agree with both of those previous statements, go here to download RxRy's self-titled release.

The Procedure Club - Rather

This is an example of a great music video you can record in under 15 minutes. Yeah, the editing may have taken a bit, but it's still really simple. Not complaining though; a lot of fun to watch. Oh, and they're from Connecticut (holla!).

Sun Kil Moon - Admiral Fell Promises (2010)

Purchase here
Listen to the entire album streaming on Sun Kil Moon's Myspace

This one's really impressive. Sun Kil Moon, the solo project of singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek (of Red House Painters fame) makes incredibly intricate and beautiful sounding folk rock. His guitar skills aren't just chords though, to he honest, this isn't your standard folk album. It's technically superb and incredibly deserving. Don't take my word for it, check it out for yourself at the above link.

Song of the Day 7/13/2010

Magic Kids - Summer

From their debut LP due out August 24 on True Panther Sounds, "Summer" is a fun, indie-pop affair. I really love the strings on this one. Also, the ending reminds me of 1950's doo-wop for some reason. I dig.

Panda Bear - Tomboy

Low quality leaks of "Tomboy", the self titled single to Panda Bear's 3rd album, has hit the internet. I think I can speak for all of us in saying I'm really looking forward to this one. If you like what you hear, you can check out the b-side "Slow Motion" here.

MillionYoung - Day We Met

This is the last chillwave song I'll do for a while. I promise. But in all seriousness, the closer to MillionYoung's second EP, Be So True, is a perfect end to an already brilliant album.

Mixtape #1

Mixtape 1 by Tolland Indie

For the first edition of the Weekly Mixtape, I decided to make something really pleasant. Go outside, crank the volume and just chill. You'll find the majority of these tracks posted in previous blog posts. Enjoy!

Big Boi - Mixtape For Dummies (2010)

Talk about a great deal; Big Boi's new mixtape (which is being released 3 days before his studio album) covers a large variety of songs from both his Outkast and solo career. From his twitter, Big Boi claims that this is the perfect 4th of July road mixtape. I guess I'll have to test that out tomorrow when I drive down to cape cod. Philip Selway - By Some Miracle

By Some Miracle by Philip Selway

Phil Selway, famed drummer of Radiohead, has announced the release of his debut solo album Familial. You can find details of purchase here, but in the meantime, check out the first track from his album (which Selway is posting online for free on his website!). I didn't know Selway had it in him, but I guess Selway is living proof that drummers can sing...and play guitar...and make really good music. I love how simple this one sounds; not a whole lot going on instrumentally, but the atmosphere created is perfect, further matched by Selway's profound lyrics. Really looking forward to this one.

Baths - Cerulean (2010)

Go here to listen to the entire album streaming, RIGHT NOW

Baths has been gathering quite a bit of buzz over the past year, but now I think it's safe to say that, after the release of this album, he is going to get pretty big. You can listen to the entire album at the above link, and if you like what you hear, you can purchase the album at that very same website.

Freddie Gibbs - National Anthem (Fuck the World)

Freddie Gibbs is one of the biggest up and coming rappers out there. Like seriously, this guy is going to be huge. The Str8 Killa EP, which is being released later this year, includes the song "National Anthem (Fuck the World)". You can listen to that song here.

iamamiwhoami - t

If you aren't familiar with the mysterious iamwhoiam, then you haven't really missed much. Although many speculate that it is a side project of Jonna Lee, it is still generally unknown who is the main artist behind the act, or if this is even a collaboration and not a solo project. Here's another video by iamamiwhoami, showing off another great song, and a well directed music video.
